Machismo Culture
Instead of mocking women for being women, the gender-based stereotypes of machismo culture are rightfully seen as the systematic oppression and abuse of Argentine women. In other words, the macho labels perpetrators as more vicious and more harmful than other perspectives on the abuse of women.
The values upheld by Machismo culture are no longer just a patriarchal stereotype: they have become a description of unpardonable heinous acts committed against women. However, harmful stereotypes about women and girls are still prevalent in Argentina, and it is their mantaination that has proven most harmful to the female population.
For this reason, activists involved in the NiUnaMenos movement generally advocate for the use of the term "machismo violence" to replace the more common term "gender violence," as the latter fails to properly hold Machismo culture itself accountable for the wrongdoings of perpetrators of the heinous acts of both femicide and domestic violence.
Because the macho male considers women weaker and defenseless, and then proceeds to abuse or violate her, the nature of the exploitation is more culpable.
Only by taking legal steps for documenting the extent of violence against women can the harms of abuse and femicide be fully acknowledged. Machismo culture also perpetuates female stereotypes that are harmful to women and girls for which it must be held specifically accountable.
However, the domination of Machismo culture ensures that stories of femicide and domestic violence are kept under wraps and not considered by legislators. The work of NiUnaMenos and other organizations that advocate for gender equality serve to highlight the stories of women who have been violently harmed by men and subsequently wronged by the Argentine justice system.
