Femicide and Domestic Violence
In its most general context, femicide is the killing of a woman or girl, in particular by a man and on account of her gender. Domestic violence, on the other hand, is violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.
In the first six months of 2019, a total of 155 femicides were reported in Argentina. There were similar findings in the first six months of 2018, as there 157 femicides reported.
With the aim of ending gender inequality and femicide, NiUnaMenos intends to also end the cycles of domestic violence perpetrated by Machismo culture, which have been ignored by Argentine government and law enforcement agencies
As a whole, femicide is a largely more obscured practice than is domestic violence, largely due to the ways in which governments record its instances. Especially in Argentina, it's unlikely that the government will draw attention to femicide, a job that is this delegated to NGOs that work to protect the interests of women in the country. Domestic violence is also obscured, though this is particularly due to the nature of this type of violence. Since domestic violence typically occurs within the home, it's not really a public matter until charges are brought upon the perpetrator.
